Yay! Our first blog post of the year! We'll be co-writing this blog as a class all year to keep you informed. We've been having a daily class meeting each morning. In math, we have been working in a whole group, small group and individually to add and subtract using different strategies (bar models, place value, number line, break apart strategy, etc.) Today, we took our first chapter test on the computer. It was a test of not only our math skills, but our understanding of the online system. After recess, we do a read aloud every day. We have been reading Wonder. We think that the read aloud is important to help us grow and develop our own reading abilities. We started reading our first novel, James and the Giant Peach. We've been really diving into the rich vocabulary in the book! Also in language arts, we are working on developing personal narratives and talking about what to do when you get stuck as a writer. We've also been preparing to start Genius Hour. Some of our projects have been approved and others are in "development". Starting next week we will be participating in the Global Read Aloud. We will be reading the book Fish in a Tree. We are really excited to connect with other classes from all over the world reading the same book along with us!

Conferences last through next week. Dismal is at 1:35.

What a wonderful week! In math, we are wrapping up our discussion on area and perimeter. We've been working from the book and on ScootPad. Today, we worked together to solve area and perimeter problems on ScootPad. Also, we took a math placement test on ScootPad. We also had art class where we colored the three dimensional buildings that we started last class. We started a new unit in PE: tumbling! We did forward rolls, backward rolls and log rolls. In science, we continue with our Sun, Moon and Stars unit. We are currently writing sun paragraphs and making our own constellations and constellation stories. We finished chapter six which makes us officially half way through Dolphin Tale! In our morning routine, we are practicing our cursive. Today we learned the letter Q. With Mrs. D, we celebrated Chinese New Year by singing and playing "Here Comes the Dragon." We also danced with a dragon.

This is Mrs. Winn's first week back. She misses Declan and Mallory oh so much, but she's happy to be back at Lincoln and in Room 21! In math, we've been talking about shapes. On Wednesday we explored shapes using the geoboards. Today, we started learning about perimeters. We measured the perimeter of items we found around class. We continue our science unit with beginning our talk about stars. We learned that constellations are a group of stars that form a pattern. We made our own constellations and constellation stories. They were so creative! In PE we learned football skills with Coach Josh. In language arts, we are reading Dolphin Tale. We are exploring the relationships within the book as well as how life events change people. We started cursive again. Today is National Handwriting Day!!!

This was our first week without Mrs. Winn.  We wish her well, and look forward to meeting her new baby!!   Breaking news:  Declan Allen Winn was born this morning at 8:51 a.m. He weighed 8 lbs, 10oz. and was 19 inches long.  Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Winn on their new baby boy!
This week with Ms. Vogel was very busy.  We went to the computer lab twice for Type to Learn, and then we learned a fun rhythm in music class with Mrs. D.  In reading, we are continuing with Charlotte's Web and learning more about Wilbur, the pig.  In science, we observed our seed sprouters and recorded their growth.  We also soaked lima beans in water and measured how much they soaked up in two days.  Then we removed the seed coat and split open the lima bean to see the cotyledon and embryo.  It was so cool!   In math, we continued to practice rounding numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds, and thousands place!!  We had an assembly with the author, Judith Viorst, who told us about how she became a writer.  She wrote a very funny book based on her own son called Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.   We also heard speeches from over ten students who wanted to be our class Student Council Representatives. Congratulations to Arjun and Sarah, who will be our new Room 21 reps. April will be our alternate, in case someone is absent.
Ms. Vogel would like to thank our parent volunteers who helped with the MESH folder, copying, creating new Writing Binders, and putting up a new bulletin board this week.

How exciting! We had our first week of homework this week on Scootpad! We also got our agendas and learned how to track our homework in them. This was our first week of taking spelling home for homework. Today, we corrected in class and took a spelling test. In science, we worked with fruits and observed their seeds. We also made some spouters yesterday and added four types of seeds: sunflower, bean, corn and pea. Today, we checked on them and some have already sprouted! Since we had left the fruits for so long, some of them were half rotten! Gross! We some more firsts this week… We had our first library visit and our first trip to the computer lab for Type to Learn (TTL). In the mornings, we started learning cursive. So far, we have learned letters A and B. We also had Ms. Vogel begin to come to our classroom! We can't wait for her to start next week! In Language Arts, we started reading Charlotte's Web. We are so excited to get our first book orders in the MESH this week! In math, we made strips of ten and added them together to make one whole strip of 1,000. It stretched half way around our room! We also did work from our math textbook and wrote the work in our math notebooks. Today, we learned about comparing numbers in chapter two. In math, we also did some physical activities to help us learn about place value. At lunch, a few people went to chorus and had fun singing with Mrs. D.

Mrs. Winn bids us a fond farewell for the next few months! Until January...

Our second week of school is already over! We started science this week. We started learning about fruits. We observed green beans and cut them open. We counted how many seeds were inside. We also described an apple and the beans. In our science textbook, we learned about how and why plants make seeds. We started our science notebooks and they look a lot like a real textbook! We added table of contents, a word bank and the life science standards. We took our first trip to music class with Mrs. D, and our first PE class with Coach Josh. In Room 21, we learned how to use our book boxes and chose books to put in them. We all presented our Identity Posters. It was interesting to learn about each other! We also started our jobs this week. We're learning how to work together to keep our classroom neat and organized like we promised. We also started our first math unit. The topic is place value. On Wednesday, we had Back to School Night. It was so fun seeing the notes from our parents on Thursday morning! We took a long, 50 word spelling test so Mrs. Winn could see where we all are in our spelling growth. We started a third notebook this week, our reading notebooks! We read "When Granny Met Johnny Appleseed" and learned how to give a STAR answer. Today, we did our second whole class journal. It made us nervous to think about other people reading our writing from the week before. We didn't have any homework this week because we did it at school. Next week, we'll start getting homework on Scootpad! We also did our first DLR (daily language review) this week.

August 22, 2014 - OUR FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL!

Wow! What an exciting first week in school! We participated in the Marshmallow Challenge. We were given 20 pieces of uncooked spaghetti, a strip of tape, and a big marshmallow. We had to work as a team to build the tallest, free-standing tower we could. Also, the marshmallow had to be on the very top of the tower. We learned how to use teamwork, listen to other's ideas and respect other people's ideas. It was really hard to do. Only one team was successful! We also created our class promise. We started by answering questions about school, our classroom, how kids should behave and how Mrs. Winn can help us. We used those answers to build our class promise together. We also looked at last year's promise to give us ideas. In math, we did a "Math About Me" project. We had to measure our head circumference and our height. We had to make sure we were measuring correctly. This week, we also made our book boxes. Next week, we'll learn about how to use them. We also delivered our first presentation with partners. We presented a venn diagram that we made about each other. Today, we saved Fred! Fred was a gummy worm. He was on a boat that tipped over. We had to save Fred by getting him into his life preserver. We had to use paperclips to move everything. We couldn't touch Fred, the life preserver, or the boat with our hands. We had to do all this with a partner without talking. It was a difficult challenge, but most of us were successful in the end. In the MESH, we were assigned our first homework project. Our identity posters are due at the beginning of next week. We also made covers for our reading notebooks. Today, we wrote for the first time in our whole class journals. The whole class shares the journals and they rotate. They're good because we can learn from our classmates and they can learn from us. We also wrote "If I Were in Charge of the World" poems. They turned out very silly!

Today was our last day of PE for the year! We had a fun time with Coach Josh today playing kickball. We also had our last music class with Mrs. D. On Tuesday, we took our trip to McClellan Ranch. We collected water from the creek, then identified and sorted the bugs in the water. We also looked at different kinds of leaves to identify trees. We saw a snake that they had in their nature center. To help us review for the test, we made crayfish diagrams. First, we drew a detailed picture of a crayfish. Then, we used our iPads and an app called Skitch to create a diagram from our pictures. On Wednesday, we had an assembly from two authors. We had the opportunity to buy their books and get them signed. One of the authors came from LA, while the other came from Canada! Their names were Stuart Gibbs and Kenneth Oppel. Gibbs talked about Poached and Oppel talked about Boundless. Today, we had a test in math on measurement. We did the whole chapter in one week! We also had our spelling test. We only have one more week of spelling this year! We also had our last running program this week! Six people from our class are going to the running program party!

In Language Arts, we started our new book clubs and had our first meetings today! For read aloud, we finished our book, A Wrinkle in Time. Next up is the Phantom Tollbooth! That's one of Mrs. Winn's FAVORITE books! TODAY IS THE WALKATHON!!! We also had art class this week. Our PE class was indoors today. We had another new PE teacher, Coach Kat! We also had Walk One Week this week! We hope everyone saved a little gas and got some exercise! As usual, we had a spelling test today. On Monday, we had a Rainforest assembly. We saw six different animals; cockroaches, a snake, a skink, iguanas, a tarantula, and a Macaw named Rio. In music class, we learned a song from Canada.

This week has flown by! In language arts, we started writing a narrative about ourselves in the future. We can't wait to share the final product at Open House! Once we started our writing periods, we were able to start recording our speeches on Tellagami. We're about half way done creating them. We also made our spring art projects. Mrs. Winn will be getting them hung and ready over the weekend. Speaking of art, we went to art with Mrs. V this week. We painted haystacks. We learned how to add texture and a 3D effect. Back in class, we reviewed our 10 Days book and then took our final test.  We had another performance this week! This time, it was with our music teacher, Mrs. D. We had so much fun learning the recorder! In getting ready for Open House, we have painted sections of color for our color poems. We'll make the frames next week. We had PE today. Our class was participating and listening very well, but we hope to do better next week! In math, we completed our first chapter on fractions and took the chapter test. We have more fractions to come next week!
